 Inconsistencies in the Cheonan Report

On March 26, the 1,200-ton Republic of Korea Navy corvette Cheonan sank off Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, killing forty-six crew members. After almost two months of investigation, the ROK government released a report that traced the cause of the sinking to a North Korean (DPRK) torpedo. But two U.S.-based researchers say the report contains a number of inconsistencies that questions the validity of the government's conclusion and the integrity of its investigation.

Lee Seung-Hun, Professor of Physics, University of Virginia and Suh Jae-Jung, Associate Professor in International Politics, Johns Hopkins University say they have carried out their own careful examination of the ROK probe and concluded that it failed to substantiate its claims that there was an outside explosion or that it was caused by a DPRK torpedo. Professors Lee and Suh say the findings are self-contradictory, inconsistent and riddled with such serious flaws as to render the report's conclusion "unsustainable." Remarkably, they conclude that there is "a very high chance" that some of the data was been fabricated.

They want a new team to restart the investigation and the international community to insist on an objective and thorough investigation "while reiterating¡¡its commitment to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula."¡¡Come along and hear what they have to say on this very important issue.

Please reserve in advance, 3211-3161 or http://www.fccj.or.jp/node/5810 (still & TV cameras inclusive). Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation.
