Stop! Cyber Xenophobia
The first step toward a surveillance society has been taken.
The Immigration Bureau under the Ministry of Justice began on
Feb. 16 taking on its website "Information Concerning Foreigners
Who Overstay Their Visas."
The site encourages the public, in a cavalier and irresponsible
manner, to provide anonymous information about those who may have
overstayed their visas. Such a system increases discomfort among
foreigners and fosters xenophobia and racial discrimination.
People should remember that "surveillance and anonymous tips" have
led to violations of human rights all over the world.
Collecting information concerning a certain group of people over
the internet raises serious issues particularly since it is
anonymous. If such a website takes root, "surveillance and anonymous
tips" will be encouraged in our society. The leaking of private
information is one of the biggest issues in our current information
society. We will discuss this problem from such a perspective.
Join the symposium and discuss building a multi-ethnic and
multi-cultural society that respects difference and interdependence
rather than encouraging surveillance and a system of informants..
